Location: Ipswich, Suffolk
Salary: £35k-£40k (Dependent on Experience)

The Reality Check: Are you tired of being someone who never sees their designs come to life? Most design roles keep you at a desk, churning out minor tweaks to parts without ever getting your hands dirty or seeing the equipment in the field.
The Opportunity: I am representing a well-established, specialist engineering business in Ipswich that is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer. This isn't just a 3D modeling role. You will be a technical lead, taking projects from the initial sales order through to factory testing and final commissioning.
Why This Role is Different:
-
End-to-End Ownership: You aren't just doing the drawings. You manage the project from the moment the order comes in until the equipment is commissioned.
-
Hands-on Engineering: You will undertake in-house testing and support factory tests, ensuring what you designed actually works in the real world.
-
Technical Variety: You will provide mechanical design and engineering support across the entire business, contributing to genuine product advancement.
-
Work-Life Balance: A standard 37.5-hour week with a half-day every Friday to give you a head start on the weekend.
What You Will Be Doing:
-
Producing complex 3D CAD models using Autodesk Inventor and 2D layouts in AutoCAD.
-
Ensuring every design is fully manufacturable and meets specific functional requirements.
-
Managing full Project Documentation, including BOMs, O&M manuals, and spares drawings.
-
Assisting with on-site commissioning and warranty investigations when technical problem-solving is required.
-
Providing high-level technical support for internal teams, service engineers, and global client queries.
Who You Are:
-
You have a solid background in mechanical design engineering and are comfortable taking technical responsibility.
-
You hold a Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Product Design.
-
You are proficient in Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD, with a methodical approach to project management.
-
You have a strong grasp of mathematics and physics, allowing you to solve engineering challenges from first principles.
-
You are an excellent communicator who can work independently but also collaborate with the workshop and service teams.
The Rewards:
-
Competitive Salary: £35k-£45k (Negotiable based on your technical expertise.)
-
Better Hours: Enjoy a half-day finish every Friday.
-
Technical Growth: Work on challenging projects that require genuine engineering skill, not just drafting.
-
Impact: See your designs move through the factory and into the field.
